Our History

Keatings Funerals was established in 1938 by Reginald “Tim” Keating and Hazel Keating, assisted by brothers George and Barney. Around the same time, the brothers saw the need for a local hardware store in the community and Keating Brothers Hardware came into fruition. George’s son, Phillip Keating, was introduced into the funeral business around 1967. Phillip conducted his first funeral at the age of 23. Tim passed away in 1971 and Phillip continued the funeral business for his Aunt Hazel, who retired and moved to Ipswich. Phillip, with his wife Helen, operated the hardware store and the funeral business, which was purchased from Hazel in the mid 1970’s.

The old funeral home was situated in a flood zone, leading Phillip to secure a block of land adjacent to the cemetery in Chinchilla. It was on this block in 2008 that the current funeral home and chapel were constructed. Phillip and Helen purchased Murilla Funeral Services from Mavis Hicks upon her retirement, and Murilla Funeral Services continues today under the Keatings Funerals umbrella.

Phillip and Helen’s son, Anthony Keating, following in the footsteps of the great men who had gone before him, chose to join the family businesses at 21 years of age. It was at this time that he married his wife, Maria, and together with the support of Phillip and Helen, the generations of caring continued. Phillip and Helen eased into retirement and entrusted the business to the third generation of Keatings Funeral Directors. Today, Anthony and Maria Keating continue the time-honoured tradition of our family caring for yours.

We’re proud of our welcoming non-denominational Chapel and the moving services it plays host to. Our facility caters seamlessly for overflow, with the option of preparing an outdoor covered seating area.

Viewing Room

The Viewing Room offers a private, quiet and intimate area for you to spend time with your loved one.

Meeting Rooms

The Chapel offers a variety of areas where we welcome individuals, families and friends to come together as we plan how to honour and celebrate the beauty of life. Hazel’s Room is dedicated to our founder and offers a quiet, intimate meeting place, filled with beautiful natural light. Whether we gather in Hazel Room or enjoy meeting as a larger group in the well-appointed foyer or Chapel, you will feel welcome and able to enjoy the honest hospitality that is our team caring for your family.

Children’s Space

Children of all ages are always welcome at Keatings Funerals. We offer a small indoor play area beside our meeting rooms, and friendly faces to help your littlest ones through this difficult time. During funerals an activity area is always prepared with an abundance of interesting diversions to keep little minds active. This area is situated off to the side of the Chapel so adults can still be engaged with the service whilst keeping an eye on their children.
