Our History
Keatings Funerals was established in 1938 by Reginald “Tim” Keating and Hazel Keating, assisted by brothers George and Barney. Around the same time, the brothers saw the need for a local hardware store in the community and Keating Brothers Hardware came into fruition. George’s son, Phillip Keating, was introduced into the funeral business around 1967. Phillip conducted his first funeral at the age of 23. Tim passed away in 1971 and Phillip continued the funeral business for his Aunt Hazel, who retired and moved to Ipswich. Phillip, with his wife Helen, operated the hardware store and the funeral business, which was purchased from Hazel in the mid 1970’s.
The old funeral home was situated in a flood zone, leading Phillip to secure a block of land adjacent to the cemetery in Chinchilla. It was on this block in 2008 that the current funeral home and chapel were constructed. Phillip and Helen purchased Murilla Funeral Services from Mavis Hicks upon her retirement, and Murilla Funeral Services continues today under the Keatings Funerals umbrella.
Phillip and Helen’s son, Anthony Keating, following in the footsteps of the great men who had gone before him, chose to join the family businesses at 21 years of age. It was at this time that he married his wife, Maria, and together with the support of Phillip and Helen, the generations of caring continued. Phillip and Helen eased into retirement and entrusted the business to the third generation of Keatings Funeral Directors. Today, Anthony and Maria Keating continue the time-honoured tradition of our family caring for yours.
